Where Can Carmel Residents Take Junk? 2026 Options and Fees

Two crew members in charcoal polos lift a worn beige upholstered armchair into the open back of a white Veteran Hauling box truck in a concrete driveway, beside stacked cardboard boxes and a rolled rug, with a red brick two-story home and trees behind.

What's In This Guide?

Where you take junk from a Carmel home depends on what the junk is. Carmel Utilities’ trash page describes what Republic Services collects at the curb under the City’s contract, and its household hazardous waste page names three drop-offs: the City of Carmel’s own site, Hamilton County’s center in Noblesville and Republic’s 96th Street Transfer Station in Indianapolis.

Below, we map which one takes what, using the City’s, Hamilton County’s and the EPA’s published pages as we read them on October 2, 2026. When the pile is bigger than a few trips, our crew handles junk removal in Carmel, Indiana.

Too much junk for the curb in Carmel?

Veteran owned, and Carmel is one of the towns we serve. The crew sizes up the load on site and gives you the price there, with no obligation.

What Junk Can Carmel Homeowners Dispose of Without Leaving the Curb?

Household trash and recycling, extra bags with a tag, landscape waste in season and bulky items for a fee, for homes on the City’s program. Carmel Utilities’ trash page says the City contracts trash and recycling service with Republic Services, that the program is required of all residents within City limits, and that trash and recycling are picked up weekly.

Beyond the weekly carts, the same page lists these curb options, as we read it on October 2, 2026:

  • Extra trash: overage tags for large amounts of extra waste, at $3.50 each.
  • Bulky items: household furniture, some appliances, bicycles and similar items, at an additional $20.00 per item paid by the resident.
  • Bulky landscape waste: an additional $40.00 per pickup.
  • Seasonal landscape waste: 20 extra bags or bundles per week in April, May and from October 15 to December 15, covered in the next section.

Those are the City program’s published fees, not our price. Under its bulky item pickup rules, the page says to contact Republic Services at least 48 hours before your normal pickup day if you have a heavy or bulky item, and that prior arrangements are required.

How Do You Get Rid of Landscape Waste in Carmel Outside the Free Bag Weeks?

Book Republic’s bulky landscape waste pickup, haul it to a yard waste site, or hold it for the next bag weeks. Carmel Utilities’ trash page allows each household 20 extra bags or bundles of landscape waste per week in April, May and from October 15 to December 15, and the utility’s October 2024 leaf pickup reminder called that fall allowance free of charge, for bundles four feet or shorter.

The bags can sit past trash day. The trash page warns that the route driver may not pick them up and may call in a secondary truck, so at busy times they are collected in the next day or two. In a November 2025 thread on r/Carmel, one resident’s bagged leaves had gone uncollected two weeks running, while others said theirs were picked up, some the day after trash day.

Outside those weeks, the trash page’s bulky item pickup rules price bulky landscape waste at an additional $40.00 per pickup, with the same advance call to Republic. January adds a Christmas tree pickup: Republic collects one tree per home on the regular service day during the first two weeks of January, and the page sets two rules for it. Cut the tree in sections four feet or less, and remove all tree bags, ornaments, tinsel and stands.

To haul it yourself, skip the county’s drop-off center, which refuses grass clippings and yard waste. Hamilton County’s materials page sends them to GreenCycle at 2695 Cicero Road in Noblesville, a private business that posts its own rates by vehicle type.

Which Carmel Drop Offs Take Paint and Chemicals You Can’t Dispose of at the Curb?

Two public sites take them: the City of Carmel’s household hazardous waste site at 901 N. Range Line Road and Hamilton County’s Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Center at 1717 Pleasant Street in Noblesville. Which one fits depends on where you live and what is in the box.

Some paint can go out with the trash. Carmel Utilities’ household hazardous waste brochure allows paint in the curbside trash cart only when it is completely dry all the way to the bottom of the can and the can has a lid, because wet paint can leak from the trash truck. A can that is not dry goes to the Carmel site, which accepts lidded cans. Hamilton County’s paint disposal page also sends oil- or solvent-based paints and stains to its center.

Carmel Utilities’ household hazardous waste page offers its site free of charge to City of Carmel residents and Carmel Utilities residential customers, while the brochure limits drop-off to City of Carmel residents and requires a photo ID. The site’s hours page lists Tuesday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, closed Sunday, Monday and City holidays, and asks you not to leave household waste outside the gate when it is closed.

The Carmel site’s list of accepted items includes latex and oil-based paints, paint thinner, wood stripper, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, drain and oven cleaners, bleach and aerosol cans, plus automotive fluids within the container limits it sets. The same list turns away items including batteries, electronics, tires, light bulbs, appliances and commercial waste.

The county center takes several of those for county residents. Hamilton County’s materials page describes free drop-off of household hazardous waste for Hamilton County residents, apart from a $20 fee per TV, and lists rechargeable batteries (not alkaline), fluorescent and LED bulbs and electronics among the items it accepts. The county’s household hazardous waste page limits the center to residents dropping off their own household waste, with no businesses or contractors, caps chemical waste including paint at 200 pounds per residence per month, and requires proof of residency. It lists hours of Tuesday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., closed Sunday, Monday and county government holidays.

Pack for the trip either way. Carmel Utilities’ page asks you not to mix materials, to bring each one in its original container if possible, to label any container that is not the original, to tighten the lids on all containers and to pack leaking containers in larger containers. Hamilton County publishes its own safe handling list and says materials that are not packed safely may not be accepted.

Should You Haul Junk to the 96th Street Transfer Station Yourself From Carmel?

Sometimes, but call Republic Services before you load. A transfer station is not a landfill. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s June 2002 manual, Waste Transfer Stations: A Manual for Decision-Making, describes one as a facility where collection vehicles unload and the waste is often compacted and loaded into larger vehicles for a final disposal site, typically a landfill, a waste-to-energy plant or a composting facility, with no long-term storage on site.

Carmel Utilities’ household hazardous waste page names Republic Services’ 96th Street Transfer Station, at 4935 Robison Road in Indianapolis, among its other drop-off sites, with hours of Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Neither that page nor Republic’s own Carmel page, as we read them on October 2, 2026, says what the station accepts from the public or what it charges.

That call matters most for bulky junk. The EPA manual lists large bulky objects such as mattresses or furniture, along with appliances, among the wastes typically not accepted at transfer stations, though it calls that a general list and says some stations might be set up to take them. It also notes that private transfer stations might not be open to the public. Whether this station takes your mattress or couch, and at what price, is Republic’s to answer.

On r/Carmel in September 2026, a commenter pointed an apartment resident to the station’s drop-off area for cardboard and mixed recycling during business hours. That is one commenter’s account, and it covers recycling, not junk.

Self-hauling pays off when you have a pickup or a trailer, Republic confirms the station takes the load, and its fee beats the per-item price at the curb. For drop-offs elsewhere in Indianapolis, see our guide to every dump, landfill and transfer station in Indianapolis.

When Do Republic’s Bulky Item Fees Cost More Than a Carmel Junk Haul?

When the pieces add up. Carmel Utilities’ trash page prices Republic’s bulky item pickup per item, at $20.00 each, with bulky landscape waste at $40.00 per pickup. For one couch or one bicycle, that is a small, known number.

The catch is where the pickup starts. Our guide to treadmill removal cost for Carmel homeowners walks through it for one heavy machine: the $20.00 starts at your curb, and getting the piece there is your job.

A multi-item cleanout changes the math. The per-item total climbs $20 with every bulky piece, each one has to reach the curb first, and the trash page counts only “some appliances” among bulky items.

A beige upholstered armchair, a small wooden end table, an old bicycle, a rolled rug and a tied stack of flattened cardboard boxes sit on the grass strip between the sidewalk and a quiet suburban street lined with brick homes.

Our crew prices the whole load at once. It sizes up the load on site and gives you the price there, at one of twelve price points, with no obligation, and you pay when the job is done.

So the line sits wherever your per-item total, plus the work of getting every piece to the curb, passes the price a crew quotes for the whole load. Count the pieces, multiply by $20, and set that number beside an on-site price you can turn down.

Who Hauls Away the Junk That Every Drop Off in Carmel, Indiana Refuses?

Paint and chemicals go to the two sites above. For the rest, it is you, Republic or a junk removal crew, because neither site is a junk drop-off. Hamilton County’s materials page says its center accepts no trash or garbage anywhere at the facility and calls it a recycling facility only. Its refused list includes mattresses, box springs, furniture, carpet, cabinets and building materials such as drywall, shingles and flooring, and it points each of them to a transfer station, with curbside large item pickup listed as another route for furniture, mattresses and carpet.

In May 2025, a renter asked r/Carmel where to legally get rid of a couch in poor condition. One reply said that with a city utility bill, you can call Republic to schedule a bulk pickup. The poster rents.
